“Arbol de la Vida”(Tree of Life) was inspired by Mexican folk art and decorative pottery. Commonly created from clay as a candelabra (shaped in the form of a tree) the “Arbol de la Vida” typically features figures such as people, flowers, animals and fruit, crafted and hand painted in detail. The “Out on a Limb” exhibit challenged me to create a unique tree and figures in this simple, Mexican folk art style. Portraying man’s fall from grace in the Garden of Eden, this quilt relates the oldest of stories with primitive style. The figures and design elements were constructed individually and appliquéd to the quilt. Yarn, trims and embellishments also add depth, dimension and visual interest. This quilt was constructed using hand-dyed and commercial cotton fabric, wool felt, various yarns and trims, felt and crochet beads and cotton thread. Techniques used include machine piecing, appliqué and free-motion quilting and machine and hand embroidery. The dimensional leaves were constructed using Texture Magic (Superior Threads). Completed in July 2010
