In keeping with lessons learned from Wendy Butler Berns herself, and from her book ‘ Photo Album Quilts’, I decided to do a portrait type quilt. A picture of my 3-year-old granddaughter, Ffiona, in a tree fit the theme and lent itself well to the techniques taught. It also illustrated her zest for life and willingness to tackle new things which is a delight to me. Making a quilt this size was ‘out on a limb’ for me as was the quilting, which was a learning experience in free motion quilting. This is my first attempt at free motion quilting!! Making this quilt involved designing and enlarging a picture, appliquéing small pieces, and adding design elements. The background quilting was done prior to adding the 3-D leaves, spider web and dragon flies. The quilt was constructed using cotton fabrics, invisible and colored threads, and texture magic. Techniques include machine piecing, thread play embroidery, fusing, 3-D embellishing, machine appliqué and machine quilting. Completed in August 2010
