Full Day workshop
Confident Beginner-advanced
Learn the process of creating simple pictorial quilts from a photograph or picture. We will use Wendy’s original design pattern “ Hello Mr. Cardinal-It’s Spring” and cover her how-to picture image appliqué steps that include freezer paper, glue stick and invisible free motion machine appliqué. You will gain the confidence and the know how to use one of your own cherished photos or pictures in an original piece.

Finished size Approximately 17” x 22” with border
“Hello Mr. Cardinal” pattern $10 – (available in class)
2 to 3 washable/permanent glue sticks –white glue, Ross, Avery or Scotch brands recommended
Freezer Paper – 2 sheets 15 to18” x 21”
Black extra fine tip permanent marker, Sharpie or Micron
Paper and fabric scissors
Masking tape
1/2 yard Décor Bond by Pellon Fusible Stablizer, 42" wide, product code #809.( Wendy will hav some for sale too)
monofilament threads- clear and smoke- for machine appliqué’
General sewing supplies

Fabric for pattern “Hello Mr. Cardinal-It's Spring ”:
I use 3 to 4 fabrics where another quilter will use one. More fabric gives
you more options. Ideally, pre-wash all fabrics to remove sizing, but this is not
always possible to do..
Background Sky:
Three to four fat quarters of light blue. Hand dyed look, tone on tone,
mottled look. Background should contrast with the tree branch and cardinal.
Tree Branch :
Fat quarter of medium to dark brown, tone on tone, mottled look adds interest
Cardinal:
Large scraps (6”) of three to five fabrics of red in medium to dark values.
Scrap of black for cardinal face
Scrap of orange for beak
For Eye: black bead or piece of fused fabric that will contrast with face. One can
machine embellish the eye with thread tooFinishing Quilt :
Specialty threads, rayons, metallics, cottons and
monofilament for machine quilting
20” x 24” of batting (Warm and Natural recommended)
Same amount of backing fabric

*8 foot tables at the front of the class for the instructor
*At least 1/2 of an 8 foot table per student, so there is room for sewing machines, cutting boards, etc.
