The Third Dimension - Embellishing with Tantalizing Threads

Confident beginner to advanced-Students need to have some experience using
a darning foot
Explore exciting embellishing techniques for textural surface design!! Come join us in this technique and project based class. Beginning with fused design elements and our darning foot, we will explore tantalizing threads, couching, the basics of machine bobbin drawing, use of tulle and water soluble stabilizer and the many ways these techniques can be used for eye-popping results.
Supply List- Third Dimension Workshop

This is a technique and project class. We will work on a practice piece and
begin a sampler during class using one of three patterns that students can
purchase
the day of class for $8.00 or a student’s original design.
- Required for
couching and free motion machine embroidery --A portion of these supplies will
be used for your practice piece and a portion for your sampler
- Machine cleaned and in good working order and general sewing supplies
- Darning foot a must, walking foot
- Fabric and paper scissors
- Monofilament thread Wonder, Sew Art, YLI, Sulky brand
- A variety of different colors of cotton, or 40 wt. Rayon, metallic, decorative
threads (The more colors you have, the more intricate your design can be)
- Bobbins wound with cotton thread
- Schmetz Top stitch size # 14/90, microtex #12/80 sewing machine needles
- Several lengths of yarns, heavier threads for couching (can be scraps for practicing)
- 1/2 yard each of several different background fabrics (such as tone on tone,
solid, hand dyed look,) medium light in value or of enough contrast for the design element
fabrics and yarns you will be stitching on top
- 1/2-1 yard Décor Bond by Pellon fusible stablizer, 42" wide, product code #809 (Wendy will have some for sale too)
- Various 6-8” squares of fabrics of your choice for your design elements.
- These fabrics need to have Wonder-under fusible already on the back so you can start cutting out your designs in class or you can use “ Lite
Steam-a- Seam II” fusible which can be applied in class
**LEAVE FUSIBLE PROTECTIVE PAPER ON THE BACK OF THE FABRIC so you can trace designs onto it during class.
- An iron and ironing surface for every 3 students
Optional (if you are speedy):
- 1/2 yard of backing and batting as well as layering and
machine
quilting supplies should you finish and be ready to machine quilt your project

For machine bobbin drawing: I will demonstrate the technique.
- ** For those who want to actually dive into the technique, you will need:
- Second bobbin case for your machine (you will be adjusting tension) This is
a larger investment you may or may not be ready to make
- Heavier threads that only go in bobbin: Glamour by Maderia Pearl Crown Rayon by YLI, Candlelight by YLIMachine Embroidery hoop 8-10” by Susan Bates (from Walmart or craft stores)
(can be helpful for all techniques)
More Optional Supplies: Solvy Water Soluble Stabilizer, black or gray Tulle, a fine
netting
Classroom Set Up
- 8 foot tables at the front of the class for the instructor
- At least 1/2 of an 8 foot table per student, so there is room for sewing machines, cutting boards, etc.
- projector screen and projector table for video camera and projector use
- irons and ironing stations for every 3-4 students
- if available, several quilt racks for displaying Wendy's quilts
- A flannel board or bulletin board for displaying samples and viewing projects from a distance
